Polk Animal Hospital - EUGENIA, Ore. - Nine years and four months ago, the headline in the "City and Region" section of the Register was "Problem Students Find Catalysts for Change."
The January 12, 2007, incident involved seven local people between the ages of 14 and 23 who were helping sick cats as part of the Lane County Youth Services Department's veterinary training program that began last year.

The idea was to direct at-risk youth who may have been in trouble with the law and other behavioral problems to care for vulnerable animals instead of the chaos that usually revolves around their lives.

"I don't think he realizes how great it is," said Jodi Wiktorowski, veterinarian and owner of Eugene Animal Hospital. "He lived in a car, he didn't have a house and he did everything himself."
Polk, who was 17 when he started the program, is now 27. He is also a graduate of the Oregon State University College of Veterinary Medicine and is about to begin his dream career as a veterinarian.
"I don't think so," Polk said. "I think everyone is capable of pulling themselves out of something."
Polk's exit was a nightmare for any child: growing up in an environment where methamphetamine use was frowned upon.

With her mother in and out of prison, and her father largely absent, Polk found herself in foster care in the eighth grade at Springfield Middle School.
After his family moved from his native Bakersfield, California, to the Eugene area in 1988 when he was 2 years old, Polk lived a life that moved from one school to another, from one apartment to another .
He remembers staying at a motel and taking care of, or trying to take care of, a German Shepherd puppy named Jack.
"There was poop everywhere," he said recently, sitting in Viktorowski's office at the Eugene Animal Hospital on Orchard Street east of the University of Oregon's Matthew Knight Arena.

He didn't know how to take care of a dog and no one showed him. It was only a few months, Polk recalled.
When asked what happened to Jack, Polk said: "I have nothing. One day when I came home, he was gone. It only happens in poor families who refuse the animal.
But she also remembers the family dog, Sophie, a black Labrador retriever who took care of her older brother when they lived in Oakridge.
"He was just a good dog and a good companion," Polk recalled. "And for an only son, he was right there."

Polk remembers dropping out of high school in what he thinks is North Eugene. He remembers living in an orphanage in Lowell, which was not a good situation.
Either way, he ended up at Bridges, a home and school run by Looking Glass Community Services, located near the Serbu Youth Campus of the Lane County Juvenile Justice Center.
The bridge is where Polk meets a teacher named Johnny Herb, with whom he has been in touch ever since.
"That woman, more than anything else, is my saving grace," Polk said of Herb, who now lives in eastern Oregon.

The Serbu Youth Campus is also home to Martin Luther King Jr. Education Center. Lisa Williams, an education major, started the veterinary training program and encouraged Viktorowski, then his life partner, then a veterinarian in the Santa Clara area of Eugene, to lead the program.
Funded by a $1,800 county grant, the program began when Herb heard about it and told Polk.
"School was my only refuge," Polk said. "And veterinary medicine was a very bright and shiny idea that no one in my family thought of. It was the only career I wanted."
So, a troubled kid who always wanted to be a vet ends up in a group home where a youth vet program is held.

"It's moments like this that, even though I'm an atheist, I look back and think maybe..." Polk said.
"I was very nervous, happy and excited, I wanted to know everything," Viktorovsky recalled to Polk for the first time. "He came dead to be a vet."

When Polk entered the youth vet program, Herb helped him get into Lane Community College. Together, they identified federal financial aid forms.

He then applied to veterinary schools far and wide and entered St. George's University School of Veterinary Medicine on the Caribbean island of Grenada.
He studied there for three years, returned to Oregon in December 2014, and completed his final year of graduate school at OSU in January.
"It's very stressful and emotionally draining if you don't do well," Polk said. "And it's expensive."
Polk worked as an intern and technician at the Eugene Animal Hospital, but must now pass the Oregon Bar Exam/Regional Disease Test, as required by state law, to be licensed to practice in Oregon.

"His brain remembers details and little things, so he remembers illnesses and things," Viktorovsky said. "He's very good with people and he's very invested in giving back to the community.
"He has what it takes because it's a very demanding career."
Since February, when Polk began studying for the North American Veterinary Exam, he and Wiktorowski and Williams have been at their Creswell home with their border sheep, donkeys, chickens, ducks, sheep, frogs, bees and more. Life.
